I grabbed the opportunity of dry skies this morning to take my monthly Vespa ride. Brrr! Despite layers of clothing, it was too cold to go far, but I was still able to enjoy a few fringes of farmland that have not yet been scraped and cleared for high-density building. Even through the winter, they’re building fast and furious in my area, and you have to ride farther and farther anymore to reach rural land.
The houses are being squeezed closer, too. Not exactly zero setback, but not much more. I understand the need to accommodate the growing population, but it still breaks my heart to see the farmland disappear for at least several generations. How many of those lifetimes do we have left?
I’ve just become acquainted with the work of Machaelle Small Wright, of Perelandra Ltd., having picked up her Garden Workbook thinking it was simply an organic gardening guide. Was I surprised! Machaelle has devoted the last many years to understanding and demonstrating a new approach to ecological balance on her 45-acre private nature research center in Virginia, by working with nature energies (nature spirits and devas). It’s fascinating!
It’s caused me to think how naturally connected we are to the Earth’s energies, often without recognizing the depth of it, and how much influence each of us really does have for harm or benefit. One of my favorite Vespa rides is through the surrounding farmland to the Oregon wine country. As we spin through the countryside, the balance of the land, the sheer alignment of it, is absolutely palpable to me. There are times when I can tell which farms are organic, and which are not, as I breathe in the spirit of the place.
When I moved to my current house, the minuscule backyard was a barren strip of sad lawn, with a rock wall preventing the farmhouse on the hill above from eroding down into the watershed, a rectangle of bare concrete forming the patio, and three lonely evergreen bushes. I would sit on the patio having a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and marvel that there were literally zero birds or bees, or even earthworms, that I could tell. Practically devoid of life. Why? Because when the house was built, the entire plot was bulldozed and all the topsoil trucked away to some landfill. The very life force of the property was shipped out!
As I sat communing with the evergreens at the end of the street, the clouds in the sky, the few birds that did fly overhead, a plan began to form. Reflecting now, I was probably inadvertently connecting with the nature spirits to heal this broken space. I added potted annuals, and a raised garden bed. That was the obvious stuff. But then, the idea to add soil and nutrients to the rock ledge, and plant vines that would eventually cover the then-empty fence, adding more mulch and dirt every year so that a healthy balance could be maintained. Along with that, the addition of landscape bushes and small trees, some in planters to avoid damaging underground utilities—again striking balance between humanity and nature. By then, birds had become more prevalent, and squirrels, rabbits and bees. The space came alive in a hundred ways.
And finally, even the rock wall took on a higher energy, with herbs tucked away into the crevices within handy reach of my kitchen. The back yard now teems with life of all sorts. With that, its balance and alignment improved, all of us—nature spirits, humans, animals and plants—are nourished. And calmer.
In my hypnotherapy work, one of the primary desires people have is to reconnect more consciously with their purpose here on Earth. They feel out of sorts, anxious, perhaps even confused about their place in this world. In these times of ecological disaster, it’s amazing to listen as so many of them learn they specifically are here to energetically bring balance between the physical and spiritual dimensions, often in unexpected ways. By doing so, they will not only be serving humanity in the way they intended, but will be healing themselves, too. Think about that for a minute.
