In 2017 I attended a Brian Weiss workshop in Portland, Oregon. Brian is a renowned psychotherapist who, in 1980, had a patient drop spontaneously into a deep hypnotic trance and experience a past life while he worked with her. These were pre-internet, pre-NDE times, and to report such an occurrence risked Brian’s credibility and career. Yet, in 1988, he published Many Lives, Many Masters, the first book about past live regression that I’d ever read.
As the years passed, I devoured everything I could find on the subject, and in 2018, I became formally trained and certified to practice hypnotherapy.
I jumped at the chance to hear Brian in person. So did several hundred others, as it turned out. The auditorium was packed.
In the second half of the session, Brian led a group activity to show us how much information can be accessed even through very simple hypnosis. We were asked to work with a partner, preferably someone we didn’t know. We were to exchange something that we owned—a necklace, ring, or set of keys—and to hold that item during the meditation. I held my partner’s keys as Brian took us verbally into a very relaxed state. He then instructed us to let any and all impressions simply enter our consciousness without censure.
An image immediately appeared in my mind: palm trees silhouetted against a colorful sky. Hawaii, I thought? No; it felt different, like a vintage “South Sea Island” postcard, its coral and gold sunset shining through palm fronds.I didn’t know exactly what that meant, but continued to stay open. A sandy beach, shaded by palms. A girl of three or four years playing in the shallows, her slightly older brother farther out in the water.
As I watched, the sense of an elderly man grew behind my left shoulder. In my mind, I turned. He was sitting on a bench, his face a wrinkled smile. He said, She’s my special one. She’s going away soon. I paused, an icicle of worry freezing me. Oh, no! Is she going to die? I don’t know if I can deliver that message to someone I don’t know! I forced my mind to quiet and continued to simply observe, waiting for the old man to say more. The child laughed and splashed in the water. But he just repeated his statement, lovingly, and with deep regret. I still had no idea what this meant, but it was so real. I wanted to know more.
After just a very short time, the auditorium was called back to full consciousness, and we were asked to report to our partners what we had experienced. I turned to her and described what I had seen. She looked pensive, not at all sure of any of what was going on. But then she said, When I was about that age, India and Pakistan split. My parents moved to Pakistan, and my grandfather stayed in India. We were very close. And yes, we used to go to the beach.
There is so much wisdom inside of us that can be unlocked! Do you wish that you had more control over some of your actions? Hypnosis can easily and safely help you reframe those impulses in your subconscious to a more positive focus. I have one client who comes back every year for a “touch-up” to control her junk food intake.
Or, I love regression hypnosis for gaining insight. It’s such a gentle way to discover the “why’s” in your life. The scenes that you experience give perspective and context for events, issues, or people in your current daily life, even some issues that you didn’t consciously realize were problematic. It’s not magic…but it can feel magical. And it has profoundly positive results, often instantly.
